One goal of our English school is to exchange foreign customs and culture while learning to speak English. We have various parties and events throughout the year for this purpose. The year begins with a traditional Japanese New Year’s party for adult students.
In America, Valentine’s Day is a day to exchange cards and gifts between friends and family. In our English school, we decorate large envelopes using cartoons and markers, and hang them over the window. Classmates select printed valentines imported from America and signed them with their names in English. The children continue the American tradition of exchanging valentines with their classmates.
The Saturday before Easter, we have a western style spring party for children in the park of our town. In the United States and some European countries, hunting for colored eggs marks the beginning of spring. The Easter bunny also visits with our children and encourages them to speak in English.
Following this event are picnics and bar-b-que parties throughout the summer. Classmates become life-long friends or even marry after meeting each other at EICS.
Our busy holiday season begins with Halloween . On the last day of October, children and adults dress in scary costumes and visit various homes for trick-or-treating. Children knock on the front door of the homes participating in our Halloween celebration and say “trick-or-treat”. Then the children are given candy we bring from America.
The first day of November, we begin preparations for our Christmas visits to an area nursing home for the elderly. We end the year, as always, with a Christmas party and a visit from Santa!
